Indian markets fell on Thursday as investors carried panic selling after US Fed’s hawkish commentary which weighed against their pause in key rates for the first time since January last year. Banking stocks were top bears, while healthcare stocks outperformed. Midcap and smallcap held a steady performance. India’s volatility index dipped nearly 1%.

Sensex erased its psychological point of 63,000 mark to end at 62,917.63, shedding 310.88 points or 0.49%. Nifty 50 dipped by 67.80 points or 0.36% to close at 18,688.10.

Bank Nifty slide down by 544.40 points or 1.24% to end at 43,443.60. Meanwhile, BSE Bankex nosedived over 639 points. On the other hand, BSE Healthcare stock outperformed with around 383.5 points upside.

Talking about the latest performance, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said, “The domestic market is responding to the Fed’s hawkish commentary, which suggests the possibility of 2 more rate hikes in the future this year, although they have currently opted for a halt.”

He added, “Due to concerns about inflation persisting above their target range, Fed officials have increased their rate projections by 47.5bps for the end of 2023 to 5.6%.”

Despite weakness in the benchmark index, Nair said, “There is buying interest observed with the Nifty Mid-cap index trading at an all-time high.”

On June 15, about 1,740 stocks advanced, while 1,784 stocks declined and 140 stocks were unchanged. Meanwhile, a total of 221 stocks hit a new 52-week high, and 23 stocks touched a new 52-week low.
