Bank Nifty expiry change a move under ‘moral suasion’? Here’s a look at expiry calendar for all F&O contracts

India’s largest derivative bourse, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) on June 27 decided to roll back its decision of shifting Bank Nifty Futures and Options (F&O) contracts to Friday from Thursday, citing the interest of “market development”.

In a surprise move, the rival bourses, BSE and NSE, issued a joint statement informing to call off the decision to change Bank Nifty’s expiry.

“Considering the need for balanced market development and avoidance of concentration risk in the market, BSE has requested NSE to consider shifting of the Bank Nifty expiry to any day other than Friday. This will help in growing this complementing Sensex/Bankex derivatives and thus de-risk the market,” the joint release said.

Therefore, with this decision, the Bank Nifty contracts will continue to expire on Thursday.

NSE’s latest move to ‘compromise’ is said to be a result of ‘moral suasion’ and interference of ‘higher authorities’.

“It may be because of moral suasion that NSE withdrew its earlier decision to shift Bank Nifty expiry to Friday. There may be some influence from higher authorities,” said a veteran broker who did not wish to be named.

The proposed Friday expiry of Bank Nifty coincided with the expiry of the Sensex and Bankex F&O contracts that were relaunched by BSE with effect from May 15, 2023.

However, henceforth, Nifty Bank weekly contracts will expire every Thursday, while monthly and quarterly contracts expire on the last Thursday of the expiry month.
