Global markets today: Wall Street falls on higher bond yields, European equities end flat
World markets today: In global markets on Wednesday, the Wall Street fell on higher bond yields and the European equities closed flat on mixed earnings.
The MSCI all-world index declined 0.9%, heading for a third straight monthly fall in October.
Wall Street
The US stocks slipped on Wednesday on surging bond yields and mixed set of profit reports.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.27%, to 33,051, the S&P 500 lost 1.36%, to 4,189 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.29%, to 12,838.65.
The yield on the 10-year treasury climbed to 4.95% from 4.82% late Tuesday.
Investors are awaiting the US third quarter GDP data on Thursday and the US PCE price index data on Friday that could provide some clues to the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy.
The US central bank will hold its policy meeting next week (October 31 to November 1).
Currencies
The US dollar rose at 150.03 Japanese yen from 149.93. The euro fell at $1.0567 from $1.0589.
Energy prices
The US crude oil benchmark for December delivery rose $1.65 at $85.39 a barrel on Wednesday. Brent crude for December delivery gained $2.06 at $90.13 a barrel.
Natural gas for November delivery added 4 cents at $3.01 per 1,000 cubic feet.
Europe
European shares ended flat on Wednesday amid mixed earnings reports.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index reversed early losses to end flat, with miners leading gains, up 0.9%.
Real estate declined 1.9%.
Britain’s FTSE 100 rose 0.3% at 7,878.63. Germany’s DAX edged up 0.1% at 14,892.18. France’s CAC 40 added 0.3% at 6,861.36.
Investors are awaiting the European Central Bank’s interest rate decision due on Thursday.
Asia
Asian stock markets rallied after China unveiled plans for $137 billion in extra debt to boost economy.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 0.6% at 17,085.33. China’s Shanghai Composite rose 0.4% at 2,974.11.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.7% at 31,269.92.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 index fell 2.6 points at 6,854.3. New Zealand’s benchmark S&P/NZX 50 index lost 0.7% at 10,844.04.
Bullion
Gold for December delivery surged $8.80 at $1,994.90 an ounce. Silver for December delivery fell 11 cents at $23.01 an ounce.
